3 Deaths in 2 Days

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:51 pm by pawpledge

Yesterday and today were a blur of vet visits and rushing around. I felt like a chicken running around with the head chopped off. But nothing beats the sufferings the poor cats are facing. After the last shelter visit, we sent 3 of Aunty’s farm cats to vet, 2 passed away yesterday.

Here are their stories:

The white one with the very bad gum is tested FIV and FELV positive. FELV is leukemia and it’s very contagious and lethal. Anyway, she passed away yesterday morning (7 July, around 4 am). She didn’t wake up from anesthesia cos her body is weak.

The ginger one passed away on 7 July, around 11:50 pm. He’s just too weak and has stopped eating for a while. Aunty M is so sad that they are both gone.

Car Accidents

Today, the Taxi Uncle who previous rescued Wawa, sent another cat to the vet, a hit and run case. The injury is all internal. The diaphragm broke and the intestines and stomach has spilled into the lung and heart area. She appeared to be having breathing difficulty. We wanted to give her a chance, cos if she don’t undergo surgery, she’s going to die a slow painful death. After a complicated open chest surgery, she couldn’t make it. She was resuscitated 4 – 5 times but didn’t sustain. At least the docs gave their best shot. Kudos to them.

One more update, not a death (Thank God) but it’s Aunty M’s Tumor cat. The tumor has erupted, the final straw of nose cancer. But the cat still seems alert, active, eating and wants affection. We don’t have the heart to put him down yet. Either he has a high tolerance for pain or he’s just not feeling it. Sent him to the vet today to see if they can give him a steriod jab or something to control the situation.

Our Saturday Visits to 2 Shelters

Aunty JC’s Cats

Yesterday the Paw Pledge team visited both shelters to deliver food and medicine donated by Good Samaritans.  The 1st trip was to the Joo Chiat Aunty’s shophouse.  The place is in a manageable condition for now, except for a few sick cats.  We gave Aunty the medicine and supplements we bought with funds donated by kind souls.

After that, we went to Aunty M’s farm and there were quite a number of sick cats.  We sent 3 critically ill cats to the vet immediately.  Two were so skinny, they were skin and bones.  A third cat had awfully bad breath and has stopped eating.  It appears that the cat has a mouth full of ulcers.  There were blackish stains surrounding the mouth, we don’t know what it is, but the cat is just filthy and smelly.  We decided to send all 3 to the vet rather than watch them suffer.  As for the rest of the cases, it seems the start of flu.  So, we gave Aunty some medicine and see whether it’ll help.  Next week we might pass her more antibiotics.

Here’s a snapshot of our funds for Aunty M.  Hopefully the balance of $1,009.22 is enough for the hospitalization and treatment of all the sick cats.  So far, we’ve only admitted 3 to the hospital.

Suffering in Silence…

Posted in Appeals, In Memory, Rescue at 11:26 pm by pawpledge

Wawa's mangled tongueWawa was a pretty tri-color calico who was a community cat regularly fed by an elderly taxi driver.  She has apparently been sick for a while but no one knew.  Last week, caregivers in the area called taxi uncle at 6 am in the morning and asked him to send Wawa to the vet because she was breathless and panting under a car.  She was put on oxygen at the vet.  Blood tests and x-rays were ran to determine the root cause.  Blood tests indicated FIV+, X-rays showed an enlarged heart, and there were sounds of fluid in the lungs.

The next few days was a strange ordeal of her health bouncing between stability and near-death.  A couple of doctors got together to discuss the results but were puzzled.  Her condition could be a multitude of different ailments.  In her final 2 days, she turned strangely violent and insane.  She bit a nurse and her tooth dropped out.  She started chewing her tongue, reducing it to a mangled mess.  She was truly suffering!  5 nurses tried to stop her from chewing her tongue.  She even used her paw to scratch out shreds of her tongue.

The taxi driver caregiver went down to assess the situation and couldn’t bear the sight of her suffering anymore.  He made the tough decision of putting her down.  Poor Wawa….I pray that she’s free from pain and suffering now :(

The doctor is so nice as to offer to do a post-mortem at no cost.  We’re awaiting the post-mortem results.  Attached is a picture of Wawa’s tongue. :(

The bill is not cheap because Wawa has to be on daily oxygen.  Please kindly help out the taxi uncle with this if it’s within your means to do so.  He feeds and rescues alot of strays, responsibly sterilises the strays in his area and keep his feeding area clean.  Please do help him out.  The bill is attached, the total is $839.95.  If you are keen  in helping, please contact us at pawpledge@gmail.com

An Urgent Appeal for an Elderly Caregiver

Posted in ADOPTIONS, Adoption Bulletin, Appeals, Fund Raisers, Rescue at 1:29 am by pawpledge

An Urgent Appeal for Help?

Aunty's sick catIn my recent visits to a cat farm managed by an elderly caregiver, I must say I can see that this Aunty is genuinely committed, not greedy over money and seriously truthfully broke.  She didn’t even have the means to take the sick animals to the vet.  I saw this really sick and skinny kitten last Sunday.  Though sick, it still tried to crawl close to me.  The next day, a guilt-strickened me called Aunty and begged her to bring the kitten to the vet.  I told her I’ll pay for the transport and vet bills out of my own pocket.  In the evening, she called me to say that by the time transport arrived, the kitten has passed on :(   There are 5 or 6 other kittens in such a state at the farm.  I really wish we can all pool in our funds to help her get through this challenge…just the challenge of putting a roof over the cats so they don’t all have to be put down.

Before I see another cat suffer and die because of lack of medical attention, I want to appeal for funds to help this poor cat in Aunty’s care.  I don’t know what happened to him but from my conversation with Aunty, it seems that he had such a horrible flu or inflammation such that his entire face is swollen.  There’s an ugly lesion in the center of his face and it’s distorting his left eye and the entire left side of his face.  Vet said that he has to undergo surgery.  Aunty doesn’t even have enough money to cover rental and transport to the vet.  She will have trouble paying for this cat’s medical bill.  Please help out generously.  If you would like to help, please contact pawpledge@gmail.com.  Or you can transfer your funds and email the transaction reference number and amount to us.  We will administer the funds and post up the receipts on our website: http://pawpledge.wordpress.com

A Caring and Committed Caregiver:

We’ve committed to help out this elderly caregiver who houses 80+ cats in a cat farm. Aunty M, let’s just call her ‘Aunty’, wakes up at the crack of dawn daily to do her rounds feeding cats in the North part of the island.  Around noon, she rushes down to the farm located at the far eastern side of the island.  The journey which includes changing of buses usually takes more than 1 hour, not to mention that she has to lug bags of heavy home-cooked food for the cats.

When she gets to the farm, she feeds them, spends hours cleaning up the farm, and medicating sick cats.  With so many cats in the farm, it’s amazing that she can spot cats that are not eating.  She’ll quickly quarantine them and force feed them.  If they still refuse to eat, she’ll put them on an IV drip.  By evening, she rushes off again on her feeding rounds in the East.  It’s a common sight to see Aunty’s petite and thin frame trudging down Katong, with heavy bags of cat food, feeding the community cats there.  After her feeding rounds on the east side, she takes the bus back up North where she feeds her neighborhood cats.  Such is the daily routine of this elderly lady.

Big Bully:

I came to know that this elderly lady was bullied by a money-minded landlord with absolutely no compassion for animals.  He is the owner of the farm and threatens to put down her cats if she does not pay rent on time.

Previously, it was suspected that he has opened up the farm door to let some of the cats run out.  Unfortunately, Aunty has no proof.  Who else other than Aunty and the landlord has the key?  Some cats went missing, some went hiding in the drain and it was storming!  Aunty found a couple of them cowering in the drain and she climbed into the drain to rescue them.  Some have died as a result of flu.

Now, someone came along and offered the Landlord more money than what Aunty is paying and he’s evicting her with immediate effect.  Of course he doesn’t give a damn about how she’s going to find a new place in such short notice for the 80+ cats.  She begged for 2 more weeks and he has demanded her to pay $2000.  Aunty has borrowed the money from her sis to cover the rental.

If you would like to help Aunty out, please speak to us: pawpledge@gmail.com
